Stay Resolute With the Help of Healthy Teas

New Years Resolutions on TypewriterThe start of a new year is often a time when resolutions for self-improvement are made, whether it’s to shed a few pounds, cut down on alcohol or sugar, walk more, or generally make changes for a healthier lifestyle. Resolutions can sometimes be difficult to stick to however; changes can’t just happen overnight and adjustments may need to be made gradually for goals to be achieved. When it comes to a plan of action, tea is a great beverage to include as part of any health and fitness regime, and there are an amazing variety of fabulous teas to choose from.

For thousands of years tea has been used medicinally, and in China was regarded as a remedy for many health conditions and a means of preventing disease. Pu erh tea for instance, was used as a nutritional and dietary supplement by ethnic and nomadic tribes in parts of Asia, whose diet consisted largely of fatty yak meat. Properties in the tea are known to help speed up the process of burning fat. Pu erh tea is also thought to have cleansing and restorative properties, and is a good source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

With diets today often including too much sugar, tea offers a low-calorie alternative to soda based drinks or those loaded with sugar or artificial sweeteners. It may take time to get used to consuming less sugar, but by gradually cutting down and replacing sugary drinks with teas and tisanes, it’s possible to retrain your taste buds and for the craving for sweet things to diminish. Some teas have a natural sweetness, such as matcha, which is also beneficial for reducing LDL cholesterol levels and can be of help with weight loss. Green teas in general have higher levels of antioxidants than other teas, and can work to speed up metabolism. Rooibos teas are renowned for their health benefits, and are versatile enough to be blended with fruits, flowers, herbs and spices to suit all tastes. Liquorice Root Herbal Tea has a wonderful sweetness of its own, and white and oolong teas often have delicate, refreshing flavours that are best enjoyed without the addition of sugar. Regular consumption of oolong tea is also thought to help increase energy and encourage weight loss.

Teas that contain caffeine can be useful for a boost of motivational energy before a workout, and those that don’t are great to relax with and help promote sleep. Herbal teas offer a wealth of caffeine-free choices, and many have cleansing properties. Teas containing spices like ginger, turmeric, cinnamon and cardamom also have cleansing and detoxifying properties.

As well as being an enjoyable experience, drinking tea can offer innumerable health benefits and be a valuable source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It is easy to prepare, can be served hot or cold, keeps you hydrated throughout the day, and can ultimately be of benefit to mind, body and soul.
